ETHICS 2014 FOR CPA’s & FRAUD EXAMINERS

Our RVACFE Chapter’s three hour 2014 ethics session was developed  by Dr. Douglas Ziegenfuss, CPA, PhD., using the Virginia Board of Accountancy’s (VBOA) “Virginia-Specific Ethics Course Outline 2014” as the course framework and accomplishes the following fundamental objectives:

To update CPAs, CFE’s, CIA’s and other practicing financial assurance professionals  on recent regulatory developments while providing guidance regarding the relevance of recent laws, rules and regulations bearing on their areas of interest and/or practice

By including an extensive question and answer session following the main presentation of the course material, to provoke thought and discussion among attending CPAs/CFEs/CIA’s, etc. on the role and practical application of ethics within their various practices

Highlights of this Chapter Training Event

–Satisfies the 2014 VBOA Ethics CPE requirement and additionally fulfills the various general requirements for two hours of annual ethics training for CFE’s, CIA’s and CISA’s;

–Relevant to Virginia CPAs, CFEs, CIA’s and CISA’s  working in public practice, industry, government, nonprofits and academia;

–Features case-based instruction to consider relevant ethical dilemmas;

–Studies common myths and misconceptions related to general ethics and provides a hierarchy of behavioral ethics;

–Updates VBOA changes for 2014, including licensing and CPE updates and new statutes;

–Includes handouts of actual VBOA enforcement cases (relevant to current trends);

–Includes course materials which serve as a reference resource.

Learning Objectives

This RVACFES Chapter training event has been designed to challenge participants to apply ethics and relevant regulatory developments within their professional practices. To this end, participants will:

–Examine common myths and misconceptions related to general ethics and review the hierarchy of behavioral ethics;

–Examine licensing and CPE updates from the VBOA, including the use of the CPA title in Virginia and the definition of “substantial use of accounting”;

–Review new VBOA statutes, including the protection of certain personal and financial information that is exempt from the provisions of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the new statute of limitations on filing complaints against a CPA or CPA firm;

–Examine VBOA policies and discuss the difference between statutes, regulations and policies;

–Explore some of the Virginia’s top issues for 2014;

–American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Financial Reporting Framework for Small and Medium-Sized Entities;

–Confidential client information; email etiquette/encryption;

–Industry issues: enforcement and nonprofits;

–Updates to the AICPA Professional Code of Conduct: independence, planning and supervision.

About our Speaker

Dr. Douglas E. Ziegenfuss is Chair and Professor of Accounting at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia where he teaching auditing courses.  Dr. Ziegenfuss has a BA in History/Philosophy from Mount Sinai Mary’s College, a MS in Accounting from American University, and a Ph.D in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is a CPA, CMA, CIA, CFE, CGFM, CCSA, CISA, Cr.Fa and CITP.

Dr. Ziegenfuss is the author of three books and thirty articles on audit related subjects.  His articles have appeared in The Internal Auditor, Internal Auditing, the Managerial Auditing Journal  and many others.  He regularly gives programs on audit management, fraud and audit quality issues.
